Historic Esty Ranch is located in the scenic Gunnison River Valley. It borders approximately one mile of the Gunnison River, which is a tributary of the Colorado River, and is only three miles north of the town of Gunnison. The ranch was one of the very first homesteads in the area and was established by John B. Outcalt, a pioneer and one of the founding members of the town of Gunnison in the 1870's.

Esty Ranch has operated continuously for more than 128 years. Today, the ranch produces high-quality Timothy and Native Mountain Meadow Grass Hay, and raises Simmental/Black Angus cross-bred cattle.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

At the request of numerous customers, we've made several changes to our small square bale average size and weight TO MAXIMIZE TRAILER LOAD WEIGHTS AND REDUCE FREIGHT COSTS.

Effective immediately, bale length has been increased from 34"-36" to 36"-38", and bale weight has been increased from an average of 55-65 pounds/bale to 65-80 pounds/bale (bale height remains 14" and bale width remains 18").

A 53' single drop hay trailer will hold approximately 714-773 14"x18"x36-38" bales, depending on the bale weight. At an average of 70 pounds/bale, 714 bales would be approximately 25 tons of hay, which, combined with the weight of the truck and trailer, is the maximum GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) of 85,000 lbs. allowed in the state of Colorado for agricultural products. As the hay ages and individual bales "shrink" in weight, an additional layer of bales could be added to the trailer load to maintain the maximum Colorado GVW.

Note: Maximum GVW on US interstate highways is 80,000 lbs., which would reduce the tons of hay able to be legally carried on the trailer by approximately 2-3 tons (21-23 tons).
